Toscana, one of Italy's most verdant re­gions, lies between the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines and the Tyrrhenian sea, bor­dering to the west with the sea and Liguria, to the north with Emilia Romagna, to the east with Umbria and the Marche and to the south with Lazio. The regional capital is Florence and the other provincial capi­tals are Arezzo, Grosseto, Livorno, Lucca, Massa Carrara, Pisa, Pistoia, Prato and Siena. The territory is varied, much of it mountainous and hilly, broken by short flat stretches condensed in the coastal areas and to the south of valleys and depressions. The main plains are Valdarno Superiore, Valdarno Inferiore, Versilia and Maremma, a former marsh now reclaimed.
